POLICIES
Irish language
The Irish language is a valuable resource for ourselves and for our children, and the protection and support of this important part of our culture is an important priority. Our language is a central part of our culture, an essential part of what makes us Irish. It brings visitors to this country, shapes the way we think, and reminds us of our long history. Its decline in recent years to a great extent is due to poor handling by the educational system, which can be resolved by a pro-Irish policy.
  • An increased emphasis on teaching the Irish language. Many international universities also offer Irish language, culture and history courses, so there is an opportunity to create a market for the Irish language. The intention would also be to increase the number of Gaelscoileanna in order to reduce the waiting lists for these.
  • There will be a complete overhaul and standardisation of the way in which Irish is taught in school and colleges, and a central website that gives free Irish language lessons from very basic up to advanced.
  • Also included in the growth policy is the development of an enhanced media centre of education, which focuses on production of Irish language games, software, movies, artworks, and entertainment products, which will make the renewewal of the language easier for young people.
  • The adoption of the Canadian approach to multilingual education, ‘active offer’. According to this approach, educational facilities actively advertise their bilingual services, so that the minority language community will understand that they are available without difficulty.
  • All trainee primary school teachers to be taught through Irish in an all-Irish environment, learning through and about immersion education, for the equivalent of one academic year of their training course, divided over the total length of that course and including the vital first month.
  • That two Irish language syllabi be developed at post-primary level: ‘Irish Language’ and ‘Irish Language Literature’. In the examinations of the course ‘Irish Language’, the pupils’ spoken, written, understanding and writing skills would be examined, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language Learning. The course ‘Irish Language Literature’ would be especially made available in Gaeltacht schools and in Gaelscoileanna.
