Environmental Policy
These are the Environmental policy proposals for Amhrán Nua.The environment is an increasingly important factor in the way we live our lives and go about our business, and as such it needs a balanced focus to ensure that its benefits are realised.

In addition to affirming a commitment to reducing pollutants released into the environment to ensure an improved quality of life for the people of Ireland, as well as its effects on the wider climate, we will convert some of the foreign aid budget into an emergency relief agency, whose remit would be to travel to disaster struck areas internationally and assist in any way possible.

In light of recent flooding events and the visible unpreparedness of the government, the need for such an agency to help coordinate groups domestically in the event of any one of a number of emergencies is clear. By creating this group as foreign relief, they will get the practical hands on experience they will need in handling problems, and build up contacts in other international groups and agencies which exist for a similar purpose. It would also be their purpose to draw up contingency plans for any and all possible disasters that might strike Ireland, whether that be flooding, contagion, sea level rises, food shortages, and so on.

The cost to the exchequer would be minimal, given that a lot of foreign aid will be converted to microfinance schemes (see growth policy), ultimately giving this group a growing budget and making it self funding to an extent.

Further policies include:
  • A focus on green and renewable energies, with exportable industrial green products being a central area.
  • An onus on councils to provide allotments for householders..
  • Switch from plastic bags completley to bio-degradable cornstrarch plastics
  • Sugar beet production - it would help develop an ethanol industry now, and helps farmers. Even limited domestic production reduces the need for external oil products, and is better for our balance of payments.
  • and there are byproducts such as foam that can be used in packaging, insulation, packaging trays, drinks cups, and so on.
  • Bio-diesel production to rejuvinate the seaweed industry. This is an area of growth, with the use of Algae. We have the educational capacity and industrial capability to develop this field, in economically disadvantaged areas such as Donegal, Mayo and Galway.
  • In addition to biodiesel and ethanol production, with proposed incinerators etc. it may be viable to look at synfuels from bio-gas as has been done in the US and RSA.
  • In our cities, we can use latent - waste heat from public projects like incinerators as they have in Rotterdam to help industry reduce costs, once installed these projects cost very little.
